Cleaner Power Technology is Driving Improved Air Quality

Cleaner power generation and vehicular technology are driving dramatic improvements in U.S air quality according to the U.S. EPA, but it’s magnitude was not fully understood until photos released by NASA in 2014 demonstrated the extent of the improvement. The two photos below taken from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA’s Aura satellite show a time lapse from 2005 – 2011.

Red patches in the photos represent Nitrogen dioxide pollution, averaged yearly from 2005-2011. NASA says Nitrogen dioxide is a good proxy for the presence of overall air pollution.

The results speak for themselves, the red patches get significantly smaller over time. This dramatic reduction in air pollution occurred even though electric power use, population and road traffic have increased during the same period. More implementation of advanced technology--such as the highly-efficient CPV Three Rivers Energy Center—will increase this positive clean air trend.
